Good Afternoon. My name is Miriam Keck and I am the Deputy President: for Welfare. I am now going to shortly tell you about move-in day and the arrangements. You should read the following messages very carefully to ensure move-in day runs safely efficiently and most of all smoothly.

Before you arrive

If you fill your vehicle with loads of individual bits it is really annoying. Please ensure you try and put things in suitcases, bags, boxes where possible as this increases efficiency. But overall the rooms are spacious so do not be panicked about bringing enormous loads – lots of space in bedrooms and kitchen closets.

Arrival Directions to Langwith College are obtainable here. You should arrive on Sunday 28th September at the allocated time for your block. The times are as follows:

Phillip Brockbank – Between 9am and 11am

Sydney Smith – Between 11am and 1pm

John West Taylor – Between 11am and 1pm

Gordon & Francesa Horsfield – Between 2pm and 4pm

You should only come in your allocated slot. If there are any issues with this you should notify Suzanne Dekker (Administrator of Langwith College) immediately.

Driving

Most of you will arrive in a vehicle. This will understandably be busy as Langwith is not accommodated for large numbers of cars. Therefore you must be patient and squeeze your cars together so we can fit you all in. Follow the instructions of the men in yellow vests and the signs. Once you are parked up outside the college your parents/friends/family should wait by your car whilst meanwhile you proceed to the Centre Building in the centre of the college.

Arriving by Other Ways

If you are coming to Langwith by plane, train, bus, on foot etc, this is not anything to panic about. Information will be available on the college and university websites for you people, especially the internationals.

Checking In Bring identification. Report immediately to the porter who will check your ID and dole out your keycard and universitycard. Return to your vehicle pick up your belongings and proceed to your accommodation block. At this time STYCs (Second and Third Year Contacts) will be obtainable to help carry your bits. You can then use your keycard to access your building, flat and room and then you may begin the process of moving in to your new home.

Moving In

STYCs will be available with carts for heavy bits. Dump your heavy loads on to the carts and carry lightweight bits in your hands. Some buildings have elevators for heavy bits and disabled people but these become busy so you may be getting a work out. No skipping out on leg day today boys!

Parents etc.

There will be a happy atmosphere on move-in day. We will play music and the Langaroo will be there (he is our cute kangaroo). But saying goodbye to family can be sad and emotional. Do not panic this is normal. The best advice for you is to have them help you move in as this is physically strenuous but once you are all moved in they are surplus to requirements. Maybe have lunch in the Glasshouse with them, go for food shopping if you need to, but then say goodbye. You have lots of new friends to make and fun times to enjoy.

Also on parents – you might forget about them whilst you are having fun during Fresher’s Week but they will miss you. So remember to text them or Skype them so they know how you are doing!

Problems

If you have problems before you arrive, contact the College Staff: Suzanne.dekker@york.ac.uk

If you have problems once you arrive my team of STYCs will be able to assist.

That is all from me for the moment. I look forward to meeting you so come and say hello I am highly approachable.

With pleasantries,

Miriam
