Looking After You in Your Home
Alex, Campaigns Officer, updates us on what to do with any accommodation problems you have.
Moving to university is a big step for most prospective students. If not worrying about who you'll be living with, having to cook for yourself (shock horror!) or going to bed 9pm sharp, many students don't realise the other side of university life, such as the quality of your accommodation, paying your bills, and so on. Most of the time, and hopefully, all of the above goes smoothly and to your liking. Occasionally, however, it doesn't.
In terms of your accommodation, students shouldn't have to deal with faulty products in their kitchen, leaky showers keeping you up at night or poor Wi-fi connection in a your flat or block. There are a number of things you can do to ensure that your problems are dealt with swiftly, and that you get what you deserve whilst paying to live in university accommodation. Below is a guide to how to go about reporting faults, complains or dissatisfaction with your accommodation.
Firstly, for housekeeping and maintenance issues within your block or house, you'll need to contact either Derwent FM if you're living on-campus, or the University Facilities Helpdesk if you're living off-campus. They will work to hopefully fix any problems you have. Here are the details...
For On-Campus
Call 01904 325 101 or 0843 289 2320 (standard landline charges apply)
Alternatively you can use the phone at Reception in Langwith's centre building to contact them for free. Lift the receiver and press the button labelled 'Derwent FM helpline'
OR
Fill out a form online (here: http://dfmhelp.mainmanager.net) or in person at Langwith Reception
For Off-Campus
Call 01904 32 5555 (standard landline charges apply)
OR
Fill out a form online (here: www.york.ac.uk/fmhelpdesk)
**Make sure you have all the relevant material when reporting problems.
If the problem is not fixed, or if it becomes a wider issue within your block or the college, speak to me, Alex Byron, Langwith Student Association's Campaigns Officer. I can look into it for you and potentially run campaigns to help get your problems sorted.
Last year your Campaigns Officers dealt with all sorts of campaigns, most notably regarding college-wide heating problems, which saw every student receive compensation. We are here to ensure that you are not dealing with problems by yourself. University is about studying hard (and having fun). You should never have to deal extensively with accommodation problems, or have to live with the dissatisfaction.
You can contact me, the LSA's Campaigns Officer, on my email, ab1639@york.ac.uk, if you have any problems.
Have a good one,
Alex ;o)
