Langwith College President 2014

A big hello from your College President

This is the start of something special. Very soon, you'll be joining Langwith. Regardless of whether you're from down the road or from across the world; no matter who you are or what you are in to, I can promise that York's warmest welcome awaits.

Our famous college spirit is infectious. We're so much more than a place to sleep and study - we've got decade-old traditions and a reputation for being loud, proud and welcoming. Every autumn we welcome a lovely new group of people in to our family, and we're so excited that you're coming to join us.

What a year to join Langwith. We're making history with our massive 50th anniversary celebrations. Our college is well and truly leading the way across the university: our social scene is envied across campus and our innovative new college clubs offer more than ever to our students. Our welfare teams are winning awards and last year we raised more money for charity than any other college. And whilst our former students now hold three of the five YUSU sabbatical positions, even our trusty sports teams are winning their share of trophies.

Please don't be too nervous about your first few weeks with us. I want you to know that we are going to take care of you. We are so lucky to have a superb team of college staff, student association officers and STYCs (Second and Third Year Contacts) who will be there for you every step of the way. If there is anything, and I mean anything, that any of us can do for you, just let us know.

It's not long until you arrive.  My advice would be to get prepared! Use these pages to get a feel for everything you need to get sorted before you arrive. Get in touch with us and your flatmates-to-be; snap up your fresher's week tickets, and enjoy some time at home with friends and family.

Your Freshers Week is going to be unforgettable.  On behalf of the Student Association team, and Langwith College, we can't wait to meet you.

Taking Care of You

Uni isn't always easy. But we're here for you.

Packing up your lives and moving to a brand new city (or country!) isn't exactly the least stressful thing to do. In amongst the whirlwind of meeting new people, exploring York, and getting stuck in to our events; your first weeks at uni might bring along some struggles. Worries about your course, homesickness, ill health, stress, financial worries and personal on-going issues are natural. Langwith has been looking after its students for 50 years, and there are hundreds of people across the University who can help you overcome whatever barriers get in your way.

We can't promise that your first weeks with us will go completely smoothly, but we can promise that there will always be caring, compassionate people on hand to help you figure things out. Issues big or small, any time of day or night, no matter what.

Here's an introduction to some of the people who'll be there to help out.

STYCs
Second and Third Year Contacts

Your STYCs are your first port of call for everything during your first week. They are all second and third year students who have been through Fresher's Week. They will help you move in, show you around campus, take you to all our Fresher's events and generally help out with anything and everything.

The team of STYCs in each block are led by two or three Head STYCs, who are there to ensure your Fresher's Week runs smoothly. You will be seeing a lot of these guys during the week, so if any problem arises, they'll be there for you.

Student Association Welfare Team

Miriam Keck
Deputy-President Welfare

Miriam leads the STYC team and looks after all things welfare for the Student Association.

Nicola Forest & Edi Adegbola
Welfare Officers

Nic and Edi are the Student Association's dedicated Welfare Officers. If you need a chat about anything at all during Fresher's Week, these two will be there with a cup of tea and a listening ear.

Hiten Kataria

LGBT Officer

Calum Stewart

Disability and Access Officer

Margaux Codsi & Marcus Campbell

International Officers

Your Student Association Welfare officers are there to be a listening ear and a friendly face right on the doorstep. They can also point you in the direction of a whole range of university welfare and support services. If you want to chat to one of them during Freshers Week, speak to your Head STYC or pop by the Student Association's Freshers Helpdesk, open every day in the Centre Building.

College and University Welfare

When you need professional welfare support and advice, there are always people on hand. Find out more about these services here.
